Background goals are hidden objectives that come with each character's background (Acolyte, Soldier, Sage and the others you pick at character creation). Every companion has a background too, and the goals of everyone in your party count towards the ten, not only your own. A goal appears in your journal once it is done, and each one also gives an Inspiration point, which you can spend to reroll a failed check.

Exploring and doing side quests completes them without trying, and most players have the ten during Act 1. Swap companions in and out now and then so that more backgrounds are in play.
