Baldur's Gate 3 Guide & Roadmap

Baldur's Gate 3's platinum takes two runs. The first, with a character of your own on Balanced, earns all but three trophies, and most of those can be missed: each of the three acts closes places behind it, and the game ends at the credits. Keep a save from the start of each act. The second run, as the Dark Urge on Tactician, is the hard part.

  1. 1The prologue and Act 1

    At character creation:

    • Create your own character, not an origin character (a companion you could play as instead) or the Dark Urge. Trophies from a companion's story cannot be earned as that companion: you cannot date Karlach while playing as her, for example.
    • Play on Balanced, the normal difficulty. Explorer, the easy one, turns off multiclassing, which the multiclassing trophy in Step 5 needs.
    • Romance Karlach, a tiefling barbarian you recruit on the Risen Road, and nobody else before her date in Act 3.
    • Never pay Withers, a skeleton who joins your camp, to change a character's class. The multiclassing trophy does not count after that.

The game opens on the nautiloid, a mind flayer ship that has put a tadpole, a mind flayer larva, in your head. At its helm the devil Commander Zhalk is fighting a mind flayer. Kill him before you touch the helm's console (Bronze TrophyDevil's in the Details).

The ship crashes in the Wilderness, the region of Act 1. Nearby is the Emerald Grove, a druid grove sheltering tiefling refugees, which a goblin war band camped to the west is about to attack. Before that fight is decided, save the tieflings in danger in and around the grove, and help Sazza, a goblin caged in the grove, escape and survive her own side. Recruit Wyll, a warlock defending the gate, without promising to kill the devil he hunts. Never side with the goblins. Act 1: Before the Emerald Grove is settled has each step.

Act 1: Before leaving for the Shadow-Cursed Lands holds the act's other missable trophies and your companions' camp scenes. They lie across the Wilderness, the Underdark caverns beneath it and the Mountain Pass. Karlach joins only once you kill the paladins of Tyr hunting her, led by Anders in the toll house on the Risen Road. Do it before you go past the Mountain Pass or into the Shadow-Cursed Lands, or she leaves.

  2. 2Act 2

The Shadow-Cursed Lands lie under a deadly curse of darkness. Moonrise Towers, a fortress across the river, is the base of the cult of the Absolute, the cult that spreads the tadpoles. Act 2: Before the Shadowfell has the steps. Plan these:

    • In the hall of Moonrise Towers, the cult's leader Ketheric Thorm judges some goblin prisoners, Sazza among them. Speak up for them so they go free (Bronze TrophyShe Cannot be Caged!).
    • When Mizora, the devil Wyll made his pact with, visits your camp, pass the checks in the talk and make her agree to free him.
Spoilers: the end of Act 2Show

In the Shadowfell, free the Nightsong, a prisoner Ketheric keeps there. She fights on your side in the act's last battle, which is hard without her. Beneath Moonrise Towers lies the Mind Flayer Colony. Act 2: The assault on Moonrise Towers has the last steps. The colony ends with the fight against Ketheric (Bronze TrophyNo Free Lunches).

  3. 3Act 3 and the endings

Act 3 is the city of Baldur's Gate: Rivington, the district outside the walls where you arrive, and the Lower City inside them. Act 3: Before the final battle has the steps, among them the last ones for the tieflings. Plan these:

    • Take a long rest at camp soon after you first enter the Lower City. Karlach asks you on a date. Accept and show interest (Bronze TrophyHot Date).
    • When Mizora returns to camp and makes Wyll choose, tell him to break his pact (Bronze TrophyLoophole).
Spoilers: the Emperor and the endingsShow

The Emperor is the mind flayer who has been visiting your dreams. After Karlach's date, accept his advances at camp (Bronze TrophyMind Blown).

Before the final battle he asks for the netherstones, the three stones that control the Netherbrain, the elder brain behind the cult. Refuse, and choose to become a mind flayer yourself. In the Upper City, kill the red dragon rather than run past it (Bronze TrophyInterfectorem Draconis). Make a manual save before the final blow on the Netherbrain, then:

The final battle lists these steps.

  4. 4The Dark Urge on Tactician

The Dark Urge is an origin you pick at character creation, a character with no memory and a violent urge whose own story leads to two trophies. Tactician, the hardest standard difficulty, adds a third. One such run could earn everything, but most players split it: every missable on the hardest difficulty, as a character whose story pulls against several of them, is a lot at once.

Start a new game as the Dark Urge on Tactician and never change the difficulty (Gold TrophyCritical Hit). Collect the best gear you know from the first run early. Dark Urge on Tactician has the steps.

    Spoilers: the Dark Urge's endingShow

In Act 3 the Dark Urge duels Orin, a cultist of Bhaal, the god of murder, in the Temple of Bhaal beneath the Lower City. Do not go down in the duel. When Bhaal speaks to you afterwards, accept his gift (Bronze TrophyEmbrace Your Urge). After the final battle, take control of the Netherbrain in Bhaal's name (Silver TrophySins of the Father).

  5. 5What is left

A missed ending comes back from your save before the final blow, a missed missable from the save at the start of its act. Any time tracks the trophies you can earn in either run.

Trophies you may not have yet

Most unlock as you play, but these might not, so now is a great time to get them done:

    • Give a hireling, an extra party member Withers makes for 100 gold, a level in all twelve classes once your party reaches level 12 (Bronze TrophyJack-of-all-Trades).
    • Take a long rest with only drinks as camp supplies, in the first run, where it takes half as many (Bronze TrophyBottoms Up).
    • Perform for the crowds in Rivington until they have paid you 100 gold (Bronze TrophyBusker).
    • Get drunk and defeat twenty enemies, most easily the rats in the Elfsong Tavern's cellar, in the Lower City (Bronze TrophyPunch Drunk).
  6. Beyond the platinum: Honour Mode

Gold TrophyFoehammer is in a trophy group of its own, so the platinum does not need it. It takes a run on Honour Mode, a difficulty harder than Tactician with a single save, where a party wipe ends the run.

  4. Act 1: Before the Emerald Grove is settled13 steps · 6 trophies

The grove's fate is settled when you defeat the three goblin leaders in their camp, or when the goblins raid it. Going on to the Mountain Pass or the Shadow-Cursed Lands first settles it badly, so finish this list before you go.

      Act 1, goblin camp library

Let Sazza leave the room before fighting Minthara.

    12. Defeat the three goblin leaders

This saves the grove. Never join the raid.

    13. Take a long rest for the grove's celebration

Act 1, at camp, right after the goblin leaders fall

Do it before you go past the Mountain Pass or into the Shadow-Cursed Lands, or the tieflings leave without you. It is the same night as Karlach's party step.

  5. Point of no return: Settling the Emerald Grove
  6. Act 1: Before leaving for the Shadow-Cursed Lands16 steps · 11 trophies

These areas stay open in Act 2 until you enter the Shadowfell, but going past the Mountain Pass (into the Rosymorn Monastery Trail) or into the Shadow-Cursed Lands ends many of their quests at once. Finish this list before either.

    3. Kill the paladins hunting Karlach

Anders leads them. If they are still alive when you leave, Karlach leaves for good.

    4. Summon Shovel the quasit

Act 1, apothecary basement in the Blighted Village

Open only the first coffin on the right.

    5. Give Dammon the first infernal iron

      Act 1, Emerald Grove

      Act 1, at camp

Take his ball, then throw it.

      Act 1, Grymforge, after Grym

      Killing him misses the trophy.

    15. Accept Voss's alliance at camp
