Talk to the Old Man in each of five places until he repeats himself, and turn your gourd into the Supreme Gourd at the fifth. Talk to him before you beat the boss that ends each chapter.
- Chapter 1, Bamboo Grove > Snake Trail: up the stairs from the shrine, on the right. He gives you the Blessed Gourd.
- Chapter 2, Crouching Tiger Temple > Cellar: down the sandy path from the shrine, then right to the end, beside a meditation spot.
- Chapter 3, Pagoda Realm > Warding Temple: he appears in a cutscene after the Macaque Chief fight, so this one cannot be missed.
- Chapter 4, Temple of the Yellow Flower > Temple Entrance: into the temple, right through the gate, up the stairs at the back of the courtyard.
- Chapter 5, Furnace Valley > Rakshasa Palace: up the stairs, over the bridge and left into his room. After talking, use the fire in the middle of the room.
The fire makes the Supreme Gourd only from a gourd with 9 charges. Shen Monkey, in his cave at Bamboo Grove > Marsh of White Mist, adds a charge for Luojia Fragrant Vines, the yellow vines hanging from trees in every chapter. There are three more of them than you need. If your gourd is short when you reach the room, come back later: the Old Man stays there after the story.

A meeting missed before its chapter's last boss can only be made up in New Game+.
