Black Myth: Wukong Guide & Roadmap

Black Myth: Wukong's platinum takes two runs: the story with everything else done after the final boss, then New Game+ for what only a second run gives. The challenge is the bosses, the hardest of them optional. Several trophies can be missed in their chapter, mostly by not talking to two wandering characters before the chapter ends, but New Game+ brings every one of them back. The long part is the collecting, since many items drop at random.

  1. 1The Destined One's journey, chapter by chapter (20–30 hours)

The story has six chapters, each its own region. Keeper's Shrines are the checkpoints. Resting at one refills your health and your gourd (the healing flask) and brings enemies back, and from any shrine you can travel to every shrine you have found, in any chapter. The game keeps a single autosave, so a fight that went wrong cannot be reloaded.

Explore every side path: the platinum needs nearly everything. Kill at least one of every enemy you meet. The Journal, in the menu, adds an enemy when you walk near it, but its page counts only once you have killed one.

Two characters turn up in every chapter from 1 to 5: the Old Man, who gives you the Blessed Gourd in Chapter 1, and a talking horse. Talk to each until he repeats himself, every chapter. Chapters 1, 2, 4 and 5 also hide a secret area, opened by a side quest, with a boss at its end. Each chapter's checklist holds its steps in order:

    • Chapter 1: Black Wind Mountain: beat the Wandering Wight, a stone-headed monk in the Forest of Wolves, before you ring the last of three bells for the secret boss Elder Jinchi (Bronze TrophyTemple of Taint).
    • Chapter 2: Yellow Wind Ridge: kill the small rat first in the fight behind Sandgate Village's wooden gate. Follow the drunken boar's quest to Fuban, a giant beetle (Bronze TrophyShifting Sands).
    • Chapter 3: The New West: kill the nine Lantern Wardens, tall skeletons with lanterns, in the Pagoda Realm prison before its captain. Beat the Apramana Bat, a golden-armoured bat, on your first visit to the Bitter Lake's North Shore.
    • Chapter 4: The Webbed Hollow: break all four of the Venom Daoist's arms in your first fight with him. Take the letters from the four purple altars. In the secret area Purple Cloud Mountain, beat the Scorpionlord and Daoist Mi before Duskveil, the giant rooster at its end (Bronze TrophyThe Cockerel Crowed).
    • Chapter 5: Flaming Mountains: take the quest of Pale-Axe Stalwart, an ox warrior, and talk to the horse stuck in a cart in Furnace Valley. Upgrade your gourd to 9 charges with Luojia Fragrant Vines, the yellow vines hanging from trees, then use the fire in the Old Man's room in the Rakshasa Palace (Bronze TrophyAlways Accompanied).
    • Chapter 6: Mount Huaguo: travel back to Chapter 5 to free the horse from the cart (Bronze TrophyUrge Unfulfilled) and to finish the ox warrior's quest in the secret area Bishui Cave (Bronze TrophyFrost and Flame).
  2. 2Everything left after the story (10–20 hours)

After the final boss, choose Continue Journey on the title screen. It puts you back before the final boss, with every chapter open. Do not choose Enter a New Cycle yet. Then work through After the story.

The secret ending is in Mount Mei, a hidden area of Chapter 3. It opens once the four secret area bosses are beaten and the quest of the Treasure Hunter, a man under attack on the Bitter Lake's North Shore, is done. Its fight with Erlang, the god from the prologue, is the hardest in the game (Gold TrophyMeet the Match).

Then beat everything still missing from the Journal and finish the collections. Many items drop at random from enemies or plants. Enemies come back when you rest at a shrine, and plants grow back after 30 minutes of real time.

Also collect 17 spells and every gourd, drink, soak and formula you can, and craft what weapons and armour you can. Their trophies come in New Game+. Before you pick up the last item of a collection, upload your save to PS Plus cloud storage. If its trophy does not unlock, reinstall the game and restore that save. Last of all, beat the final boss again: the Old Man's Journal page needs it.

Trophies you may not have yet

These might not unlock as you play, so now is a good time for them. Any time says where each opens.

    • Add a soak to your drink in the Brew menu of Shen Monkey, the brewer in Chapter 1's Marsh of White Mist (Bronze TrophyBrew of Bravery).
    • Craft any medicine at a shrine once the giant frog in Chapter 2's Sandgate Village has given you a formula (Bronze TrophyCreative Concoction).
    • Finish the quest of Chen Loong, a dragon at Chapter 3's Bitter Lake, which opens the hidden Zodiac Village. Plant seeds with him there and harvest them after a boss fight or two (Bronze TrophyHappy Harvest).
    • Upgrade any armour piece at Yin Tiger, the blacksmith in Zodiac Village (Bronze TrophyPound and Perfect).
  3. 3A new cycle for the last few trophies (10 hours)

Choose Enter a New Cycle on the title screen. As the prologue's fight against Erlang begins, three trophies unlock:

Play on to the end of Chapter 5, beating every secret area boss again, and work through New Game+:

    • Buy the soak and the gourd Shen Monkey sells only now. The gourd appears once every Journal page is filled (Silver TrophyBrewer's Bounty).
    • Buy the Soul Remigration Pill formula from Xu Dog, the wolf merchant (Bronze TrophyPage Preserver).
    • Craft the last weapons, among them three staffs that exist only in New Game+ (Silver TrophyStaffs and Spears).
    • Beat the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast at the end of Bishui Cave again for the last Bull King's Iron Horns, then craft the last armour (Silver TrophyMantled with Might).

Anything you missed waits in its chapter again.
