Talk to the horse in each of five places until he repeats himself, then free him after Chapter 5. The boss that ends a chapter is your last chance to meet him in it. At the third meeting he also gives you the Trailblazer's Scarlet Gourd for Silver TrophyBrewer's Bounty.

  1. Chapter 1, Bamboo Grove > Back Hills: down the stairs from the shrine and left into the cave. He sits at its side.
  2. Chapter 2, Sandgate Village > Village Entrance: through the village past the rat archers, then left to the meadow. Beat the Earth Wolf there and find the horse tied up in the pagoda.
  3. Chapter 3, New Thunderclap Temple > Temple Entrance: straight through the first building and up the stairs, down the stairs on the left into the next building, then up to its balcony. He stands at the end of the wooden bridge.
  4. Chapter 4, Webbed Hollow: on the main path from the Bonevault shrine towards the Cliff of Oblivion, he jumps out of a cocoon.
  5. Chapter 5, Furnace Valley > Valley Entrance: he is stuck in the element cart in the corner of the lava pool on the right. Use the cart and talk to him until he repeats himself. He cannot be freed yet.
  6. Once Chapter 5 is over, travel back to the cart, beat the enemies around it and pull the string.

Pulling the string unlocks the trophy and gives you Dark Thunder, a transformation that Silver TrophyMaster of Magic and Silver TrophyFickle Forms need.
