A Way Out Guide & Roadmap

A Way Out's platinum takes one run through the story with a partner, and nothing in it is missable. The game is co-op only: two people play on one console with two controllers or online, each as one of its two escaped prisoners, Leo or Vincent. Every trophy is an optional bit of fun along the way, and Chapter Select brings back any part you skipped. Almost every trophy unlocks for both of you, whoever does it.

  1. 1Play the story

    Before you start:

    • Trophies only go to a player who owns the full game. A friend who plays through the free Friend's Pass (a trial that lets someone without the game join an owner) earns none, so each of you needs a copy.
    • A few trophies can only be done by Leo or only by Vincent, and each one's guide says which. Otherwise it does not matter who plays whom, except that Leo has to tap a button fast for 20 dips in the prison yard at the very start. Let the faster tapper play him (Gold TrophyThe Dip).

    Then play the five chapters through once. The trophies all sit in the first four, where the story lets you look around before moving on. The story lists them in the order you reach them, with what moves the story on past each.

    Two men are playing baseball in the trailer park at the start of chapter 3. Take turns at bat, since the home run counts only for the player who hits it (Gold TrophyHome Run).

    If you would rather not know what is coming, go in blind and leave everything for step 2.

  2. 2Going back for what you missed (under an hour)

    After the ending, Chapter Select in the main menu takes you to any part of a chapter by name, such as Escape – The Yard. Each trophy's guide names the part. Load it, do what is missing and quit to the menu. Check both players' lists for the home run. A partner who has finished the game can host it online and take you from part to part. If a trophy does not unlock, load the part again and repeat it.

    Every trophy in the order you reach it. Leo and Vincent are the two characters you play. Each step says what moves the story on past it, and Chapter Select brings back anything you pass by.

    1. Beat the dip record as Leo

      Chapter 1 (Escape): The Yard

      Leo talks to the older man by the dip bars and does 20 dips in a row. Do it before Leo heads up to the basketball court, where a fight starts.

    2. Free the bird in the warden's office

      Chapter 1 (Escape): Prison Escape

      After breaking in through the office window, step out on its balcony and open the birdcage. Either of you can.

    3. Sit on the rock bench above the river together

      Chapter 2 (Fugitives): Breather

      At the start, take the far-right path to the cliff edge, follow it left and jump the small gap to a flat rock. Both sit down. Do it before you lift the fallen tree together.

    4. Open the secret room behind the grandfather clock

      Chapter 2 (Fugitives): The Farmstead

      Once you're inside the farmhouse (either way past the elderly couple works), both press interact at the clock downstairs at the same moment, then open the chest in the room that opens off the stairs.

    5. Play the piano and banjo together

      Chapter 2 (Fugitives): The Farmstead

      Vincent at the piano, Leo on the banjo, both on Easy: hit about 20 notes in a row together until a cutscene plays.

    6. Spin the windmill

      Chapter 2 (Fugitives): The Farmstead

      Climb the small windmill by the horse barn and keep pressing interact on the blades until a cutscene plays. Do all three farm trophies before the truck in the big barn is repaired.

    7. Sit on the seat for two in the playground

      Chapter 3 (Preparation): Reunion

      In the trailer park where the chapter starts, both sit down together on the two-person seat by the swings.

    8. Tell the woman with the bat where her husband is

      Chapter 3 (Preparation): Reunion

      Talk to the woman sitting outside her trailer with a baseball bat, knock on the nearby trailer with noises coming from inside, then go back and tell her.

    9. Both hit a home run

      Chapter 3 (Preparation): Reunion

      Ask the two men playing baseball to let you bat and hit the ball far over the fence. It only counts for the batter, so take turns. Finish the trailer park before pushing the dumpster that leads to Leo's family.

    10. Help Leo's wife start the motorbike as Vincent

      Chapter 3 (Preparation): Reunion, at Leo's family's trailer

      Leo goes into the trailer and waits. Vincent fetches the wrench from the shed for Linda, Leo's wife, then starts the bike. Leo mustn't fix the sign by the treehouse yet.

    11. Let Leo lose his temper on the roof

      Chapter 3 (Preparation): Violent Questioning

      After catching Ray, the man you chase through the building site, push his chair to the edge together. Leo then leans on the table by the red door. The trophy has the details. Do it before Ray starts talking.

    12. Watch the Moon landing in the hospital waiting room

      Chapter 3 (Preparation): A New Life

      After the lift ride up, turn on the TV in the waiting room, both sit on the couch in front of it and leave the controllers alone until a dream starts. Do it before talking to the nurse at the ward's desk.

    13. Start the arcade machine together

      Chapter 4 (Vengeance): Lift Off

      Both interact with the yellow arcade machine at the back of the hangar. You can back out without playing.

    14. Climb into the helicopter as Leo

      Chapter 4 (Vengeance): Lift Off

      Through the small room in the hangar's corner and out of its red door, Leo gets into the helicopter on the pad. Do both hangar trophies before opening the hangar doors and boarding the plane.
